River erosion is the removal of rock material from the banks and bed of a river. In this unit, students will use a physical model of a river bed to determine the causes of erosion and will brainstorm ways to prevent it within their model. Concepts of environmental engineering will be applied to help students understand the implications of, both the causes of, and partial solutions to, erosion issues as they relate to a river model. Throughout this unit, students will apply science, technology, engineering, and math knowledge as they design multiple erosion-reduction methods. Students will use scientific and geographic skills to collect, organize and evaluate where, why and how erosion occurs. Students will use mathematical number sense as they apply their measurement skills to determine distances as they create a useful method to help prevent erosion.
