Pollution Solution: Community Aquifer Contaminants

Students will assume the role of an environmental engineering EPA officer for this lesson. They will investigate a contaminated off site residential property and will try to determine the source of contamination. Surrounding the property is Wright Patterson Air Force Base, a dry cleaner, and a corporate farm. Students will investigate contaminants from each of the properties using chlorine, ammonia, and nitrate test kits. On the final day of the project, students will be given a water sample from a monitoring well at the residential site. They will proceed to use their tools and the knowledge they have gained to determine which party is responsible for cleaning up the contaminants at the off-site residential property. Students will also address possible means of remediation (even if the only option is to use another well from a neighboring community).
