Eco-Park Design

In this unit, student design teams create a plan for an Eco Park that achieves multiple goals for their client, International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF). Students gain knowledge about the ecology of various ecosystems and explore both positive and negative ways in which humans impact the environment. They brainstorm solutions for reducing detrimental effects…

Stop Stomping on Me

Student engineering teams assist a city that is building a new soccer field for the World Cup competition.  To protect the city’s precious groundwater, the city requires a field that is as environmentally sustainable as possible, but also meets the needs of professional players.  Students are challenged to design the optimum layered soil arrangement (soil…

Can You Stand on Me?

Visitors to schools in underdeveloped countries have found that students suffer from a lack of technology. Some students do not even have access to a flat surface on which to write. Service groups and industries in the United States, have shown interest in providing learning materials for students of such schools. When groups ship materials overseas,…

Eco-Shipping

Student teams utilize the engineering process to build an eco-friendly, cost-effective packaging prototype for shipping products.  In order to effectively complete the design challenge, students research recyclable packaging options for diminishing the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill.  Teams follow the engineering design process to design a prototype, and utilize a Decision Analysis…

Electric Vehicle: Body Design

This lesson is designed to be done independently, consecutively, or concurrently with the Rolling Resistance, Transmission, Electric Power Source, and Electric Motor Lessons for the Electric Vehicle (EV) Unit. Power efficiency is the goal of all good environmentally conscious designs. As you will see throughout the EV unit, there are many factors that influence this…

Compressed Air Vehicle

*Please note that while this unit is complete, we are in the process of updating both the curriculum and the standards. This activity will introduce students to the use of compressed air as a means of propulsion.  The goal is to allow students to discover the relationship between the amount of compressed air and the…

The Dayton Trebuchet

In this lesson students will design a working trebuchet for maximum accuracy, distance and force using the engineering design process. Students will utilize the measurement formulas to calculate kinetic and potential energy and therefore create a trebuchet for a specific function (ex. Hitting a target, knocking down a wall or launching for distance).

Let It Shine

This investigation is to introduce/solidify students’ working knowledge of sorting and classification.  Through this process students will investigate light transmittance through everyday objects.  The students will perform a simple flashlight test to classify objects into three predetermined groups; that of transparent, translucent, and opaque.  Students will create class graphs to represent the discoveries.  An in…

Engineering Community Gardens

In partnership with an NSF:RET grant and the University of Dayton the Dayton Regional STEM Center presents the following unit. In this lesson student are given specific constraints in which they apply energy transformations while designing a water collection and transport system.  Teams of students will collaborate to assist community gardeners, especially the handicap, collect…

Indoor Sportsplex

Due to an increasing student population, along with student demand at City College, a multi-purpose sportsplex has been proposed. The school has set aside money and space (200,000 square feet) for development of a multi-function facility. Students will take on the role of civil engineers at an architectural firm and submit a design for this…
