Concussions are a headache

Grades: 11, 12
Industry: Human Performance and Medicine
Content Area: Algebra, and Motion, Conditional Probability & the Rules of Probability, Creating Equations, Energy, Physics, Research to Build and Present Knowledge, Speaking and Listening, Text Types and Purposes

Microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS, are a crucial, yet little understood part of our everyday lives. MEMS are very small devices which can be found in printers, air bags, smartphones, game controllers, TVs, and many other types of household items. This STEM unit will introduce students to the world of MEMS through a very important type of MEMS – […]

Moving On Up

Grades: 11, 12
Industry: Advanced Manufacturing and Materials, Environmental Engineering
Content Area: Algebra, Contemporary World Issues, Creating Equations, Design, Design Process, Designed World, Physical Science, Reading: Informational Text, Speaking and Listening, Statistics, Technology, Writing

Teams of students will design and build a model for a transportation system in the Virunga Mountains. Student learning will focus on science (physics of simple machines), math (statistics and modeling), language arts (technical writing) and history (African people and mountain ranges) to solve this problem.

Mechanical Cornhole

Grades: 9
Industry: Advanced Manufacturing and Materials
Content Area: Creating Equations, Design, Designed World, Physical Science, Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities, Writing

In this instructional unit, students will analyze the force interactions of simple machines to identify ways to mechanically perform the task of depositing a bean bag into the hole on a cornhole board.  Following analysis of four simple machines, students will design a system that is both accurate and precise in its function.  Students will […]
